Running a F&B business in Singapore is no easy feat. With the high and ever-rising costs of operations coupled with slim profit margins, and the daily hustle of juggling operations, it's easy to get stuck in a reactive cycle—one that leaves you feeling burnt out and exhausted.

Almost two decades ago, when I started out in my family’s agency business supporting the largest oil & gas owners and operators in the world, I was introduced to the relentless nature of business operations. After asking my father what my position in the company should be, he jokingly but very seriously responded, "Like everyone in a family-owned business, you're a firefighter."

Over time, I realized that this reflected a deep truth—the passion driving business owners to do more than others would, but also leaving them burned out from trying to do it all themselves. This constant firefighting, born from wanting control or fearing others won’t understand the business enough, can be draining.

However, this mindset and working style are ultimately detrimental to the long-term health of the business. Constantly reacting to problems in the short term often blinds owners to bigger opportunities for growth and improvement. Focusing solely on day-to-day crises impedes the ability to innovate, plan ahead, and expand.

The real challenge is learning how to shift from reactive firefighting to proactive, strategic growth. So, how do you make that shift?

1. Think Long-Term, Not Just Survival

Many F&B operators focus on immediate problems—staffing issues, inventory management, rental hikes—but miss the bigger picture. Successful businesses don’t just focus on day-to-day challenges. Large corporations use structured frameworks for everything from assessing business feasibility to creating continuity plans during crises. These frameworks, when tailored and simplified, are just as powerful for SMEs. By incorporating strategic planning, you can shift from constantly reacting to crises to building sustainable growth.

2. Stop Firefighting, Start Building a "Firefighting System"

When problems arise—a late supplier or an underperforming staff member—it feels urgent to fix them immediately. But wouldn’t it be better to have systems in place to prevent these problems? Instead of calling the fire department when there’s already a blaze, think of it like installing fire alarms and sprinklers. Start preparing your business for challenges before they escalate. This can include setting contingencies, forming partnerships, and leveraging government support to mitigate risks.

3. Build for the Future, Not Just the Present

F&B operators often get caught up in surviving the month or year, leaving little time for long-term planning. But having someone to help you build a future—whether by introducing new perspectives, refining your vision, or offering objective advice—can free you from daily firefighting. It’s about creating systems so that your business thrives even when the market shifts or unforeseen challenges arise.

Stop putting out fires—start building a roadmap for long-term success. Let’s work together to ensure your business not only survives but thrives. Great businesses start with great conversations. Let’s grab a coffee and work on how we can transform your F&B operations into a long-term success story.
